You''re the kind of person who wakes up wanting to know what happened overnight and can''t help but think about how to explain it to a friend over coffee.About usThe Squiz is an independent Australian news company that helps time-poor Australians stay informed without feeling overwhelmed. We deliver agenda-free, fact-based news through daily newsletters and podcasts, and we''re building the next generation''s media literacy through Newshounds our classroom program for 7-12 year olds. We''re a team of 15 people running a sustainable, independent business.The roleThis is a frontline editorial role at the heart of what we do. You''ll set the news list, write and script Squiz Today, host the podcast, and front our growing video output - all before most people have had their first coffee.You''ll be the voice our audience trusts to cut through the noise. That means going beyond the headline to find the why, translating complex stories into plain language, and all the time, ensuring we never tell our audience what to think.You''re someone who:Has deep knowledge of Australian politics and world news and can look across the news landscape and quickly know what matters to our audience;Writes and talks clearly and concisely;Is as comfortable in front of a mic as behind a keyboard;Takes the extra step to bring a story to life - the context, the background, the why;Works well in a small, collaborative team where everyone''s contribution counts;Thrives under deadline pressure without cutting corners on accuracy;Knows how to have a good time, we work hard but we genuinely enjoy what we do, and we want someone who brings that energy. Ideally you''ll have at least 5 years of news experience and a strong interest in where digital media is heading. A love of The Squiz''s approach to news - agenda-free, accessible, respectful of the audience''s intelligence - is non-negotiable.What you''ll be doing:Working with the new team to own the daily news list, contribute to content planning, and stay ahead of breaking stories without losing sight of the bigger picture;Produce the Squiz Today newsletter and podcast script daily, plus other content across our platforms;Co-host the podcast and contribute to our growing video output;Work with our partnerships team to craft sponsor content that fits our editorial standards.The detailsFull-time, starting ASAP. Sydney-based with regular time in our Surry Hills office.Hours: Full time with early morning starts required on rotating days (think 4am - from home, not the office).
