Algae Testing Laboratory Technician

ALS Environmental are seeking a motivated and detailoriented Algae Testing Laboratory Technician to support our growing algae monitoring program. This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates or earlycareer scientists wanting handson training in algal identification and enumeration.This role is a permanent, part-time role Monday to Friday 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM (20hrs/week). Proceeding training period (approx. 6+ months) we require additional flexible availability (morning & afternoon shifts). Key Responsibilities:Perform algae identification and enumeration using microscopy (training provided)Assist in the detection of cyanobacteria, diatoms, green algae, dinoflagellates and other key groupsPrepare slides, and reagents as required for microscopic analysisReceive, log, and process water samples from various sourcesMaintain accurate laboratory records and follow QA/QC proceduresSupport reporting and data entry under the guidance of senior analystsFollow all safety and NATAaccredited laboratory protocolsQualifications: Diploma or bachelor''s degree in biology,Microbiology, Environmental Science, or a related disciplineStrong attention to detail and eagerness to learn microscopy-based analysisGood communication and teamwork skillsAbility to work efficiently in a fast-paced lab environmentPrior algae experience desirable or at least a keen interestWhat we offer: Extensive on-the-job training in algal taxonomy and enumerationOpportunity to work with experienced phycologist and environmental specialistsCareer progression pathways in phycology & microbiology and water quality testingSupportive team environment in a professional laboratory settingThe duties of this position include but are not limited to:Analysis of algae using light microscope as primary responsibility.Ensuring that the quality of work is maintained in accordance with QWIs.Meeting turn-around requirements.Adhering to all safety requirements.General laboratory housekeeping.The ideal candidate would have the following attributes:Strong written and verbal communication skills.Microscopy experience.Excellent organisational skills.Works effectively independently and in a team environment.Shows attention to detail.A safety focus.Working at ALSThe ALS team is a diverse and dedicated community united by our passion to make a difference in the world.Our values are important to us, and shape how we work, how we treat each other and how we recognise excellence.At ALS, you''ll be supported to develop new skills and reach your full potential.
