The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the Department) is seeking an ongoing VPS 4 Solicitor, Legal Services to provide a critical role within Liquor Control Victoria. About Us: The Victorian Government is responsible for issuing liquor licences and overseeing industry compliance and enforcement to ensure that Victorians and visitors to the state enjoy safe and responsible liquor licensed environments. On 1 July 2022 the Victorian Liquor Commission was established by legislation as the independent Victorian liquor regulator. Staff for the Victorian Liquor Commission are provided by Liquor Control Victoria, which is a business unit of the Department of Justice and Community Safety, within the Victorian Government. About the Role: In the role of Solicitor, you will use your expertise and experience to provide sound independent and authoritative advice and liaise with persons at senior levels under the strategic direction of the Deputy General Counsel and Director. The Solicitor also prepares briefings on whether or how the Commission should exercise its functions, prepares briefings to counsel, acts as instructing solicitor and, on occasion, represents the Commission before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal as well as conducts prosecutions on behalf of the Commission. The role requires working to tight deadlines to meet constantly changing priorities and address urgent new and emerging developments, in the evolving area of liquor regulation. Some of your duties will include: Preparing briefings on whether/how the Commission should exercise its functions, prepare briefings to counsel, act as instructing solicitor and, on occasion, represent the Commission before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Conducting prosecutions on occasion on behalf of the Commission. Providing other legal advice in a range of various areas including but not limited to administrative law (in particular, matters relating to Freedom of Information, privacy and subordinate legislation) and commercial contract arrangements.
